Kentucky is a land full of adventures for the whole family. and we’re excited to try em all. Below are a list of some amazing experiences. Those not in bold are yet to be experienced.
GO ROLLERSKATING
There’s just something special about visiting a small town local roller rink and there a 2 in the area worth a visit. Starlight Roller RInk in Williamstown and Charley’s (established 1957) in Cythiana.
GO RIDE THE RAIL
Rail Explorers, located in Versailles, offers groups of 2 or 4 to ride an old train track through horse farms, deep limestone cuts, and views of the Wild Turkey Distillary and High Bridge.
GO DOWN UNDER
Kentucky Down Under offers a visit to the outback where you can see emus, dingoes, kangaroos and lemurs. If you want to literally go down under, you can add on tour through their Onyx cave system.
GO TO A MUSEUM
There are so many unique museums located in the region and each has their own place in history. The Great American Dollhouse Museum, The Mary Todd Lincoln House, The Nostalgia Toy Museum, The Toyota Experience Tour, The Country Music Highway Museum and The Bluegrass Hall of Fame are just a few.
GO TO THE ARCADE
Q-Bert, Ms. Pac Man, Ski Ball and over 15 separte pinball machines!! The Burl Arcade is the place to be. There’s a photo booth and a bar that serves local beers. Located across from the Distillery District. Be sure to stop by Crank and Boom Ice Cream on your way out.
GO TO MIFFYTOWN
Everyone knows about Hello Kitty, but do you know about Miffy. Miffy is the beloved bunny created in the Netherlands and loved around the world with their headquarters located in Williamstown. Stop by Hansie Flip burgers for a homemade shake.
GO TO THE ZIP LINE
The Red River Gorge Zipline offers 5 separate zip lines including one that’s 1900 feet long and 300 feet above the gorge!
GO RIDE A BIKE
The Bluegrass Legacy Trail is a 12 mile long paved trail that goes from Lexington to the Horse Park with plans to extend further. The 12 mile loop at the Skullbuster Trail offers wild terrain and steep descents for those who enjoy mountain biking.
GO BACK IN TIME
Shaker Village offers 3000 acres of preserved farmland and historical preservation of the Shaker lifestyle. Shakers are a religious sect similar to the Amish or Quakers, but with their own separate beliefs and traditions. Take a ride on the Dixie Belle Riverboat or take a class to learn how to make a footstool from hand.
GO IN A CAVE
Kentucky boasts the largest cave system in the world. At 425 miles, Mammoth Cave National Park offers self guided tours, group tours or the extreme crawling tours. Be sure to plan your visit ahead of time as most tours sell out on a daily basis. You can also Kayak in an old limstone mine at The Gorge Underground. Or if you like, you can explore a cave through the comfort of your own car at the Louisville Mega Caverns. During the holidays, check out Lights Under Louisville for a lighted tour like no other.
GO TO THE ARK
The story from the bible says that Noah built an ark (a very large wooden boat) to save his family from the great flood. Well The Ark Encounter recreated the Ark with over 3.3 million board feet of lumber standing at 51 feet tall and 85 feet wide. This phenomenom is known to be the largest timberframe structure in the world. If you care to see the ark from a distance without going to the park, check out the view behind the Dollar General at exit 154 off of 25
HOT BROWNS AND BEER CHEESE
Everyone knows about the Bourbon Trail, but did you know about the Beer Cheese Trail or how about the Hot Brown Trail (an open faced sandwhich created in Louisville that features sliced turkey, bacon, tomatoes and covered in a cheesy mornay sauce.) ?? Kentucky is a land meant to explore. We hope y’all get to check out some cheesey options along the way.
